Welcome to Reception at John Locke Academy
We would like to offer you a warm welcome to the John Locke Academy community. We look forward to working with your family in the coming years and hope that the information below will allow you to start making preparations for your child to join our reception classes in the Autumn term.
Reception Start Dates
To ensure a smooth transition to reception we have found it beneficial to stagger the first few days of full time school, usually beginning in the second week of term. However, as the current situation remains unclear regarding schools opening, information regarding start dates will be confirmed at a later date.
The previous transition plan is as follows:
Reception children usually attend from 9.30am to 1pm (staying for lunch) for the first 3 days. This increases to 9.30am to 3.25pm for the following 2 days and then providing they settle, they begin full time school during the following week, 8.45am to 3.25pm.
Should we feel that your child is struggling to settle into full time school, we will contact you to discuss staggered entry for a longer period of time.
Timings of the day
Reception teachers are in their classrooms from 8.45am, allowing parents to bring their children into class and help them settle into the morning if they wish to. This is a chance to have an informal chat with the teacher or learning support staff, choose a reading book, or support your child with learning at the beginning of the day. The doors close at 9.10am which is when all children should be in class by. The reception school day ends at 3.25pm.
The EYFS curriculum encourages children to ‘Learn through Play’. All of the activities set out in the classrooms, outside and shared areas are learning opportunities for the children. Children are assigned to a class where they access ‘whole class’ learning and activities such as phonics and storytime. Throughout the day there is freeflow inside and outside and the children are encouraged to explore the activities available in all of the reception classrooms and shared areas. There is a balance of whole class learning, child-initiated learning and adult-led focussed activities each day.
All children in reception, year 1 and year 2 are entitled to a free lunch at school under the government Universal Infant Free School Meal programme. Further information from our school caterers, the Pantry, will follow at a later date. Each child is also provided with a piece of fruit each day and a carton of milk. It is therefore vital that you ensure that you note any allergies that your child may have on the data capture form that has been sent to you.
We are proud of our John Locke Academy uniform. It helps to create the school identity, a sense of community and unity.
Pupils in reception wear a royal blue sweatshirt or cardigan with the school logo; a white short sleeved polo shirt; grey trousers or skirt. In the summer, grey shorts or light blue checked summer dresses may be worn.
Shoes should be comfortable and black. Trainers may be worn for going outdoors. Socks should be black, grey, blue or white; tights should be grey or dark blue.
PE kit – Physical activities form an important part of the daily EYFS curriculum. Formal PE lessons are introduced during reception once children have settled and continue as part of the national curriculum throughout the rest of their primary education. Parents will be given notice of when children will require a PE kit, allowing you to buy the kit nearer the time, in case of a growth spurt!
Learning doesn’t stop because of the weather and we have designed outdoor spaces that children can use whatever the weather is. We would ask that all children in reception have a pair of wellies that they keep in school and wear a suitable coat to school with the day's weather in mind. This will make sure that children can access the daily outdoor learning activities during our notorious British winters – or spring, autumn and summer!
Children require a ‘book bag’ which can be purchased from the supplier below.
Parents may order uniform items directly from Price Buckland, our uniform supplier. Details can be found at the website below:
We encourage children to drink water throughout the day. Children may bring in a water bottle each day which they can ‘top up’ if necessary.
All items of clothing, including shoes, wellies, PE kits, book bags and water bottles must be clearly named.
Breakfast and After School Club
As the breakfast and afterschool club is now full, from September 2020, this service will be available to pupils from year 1 upwards only.
