Design and Technology

Giving learners the courage to take creative risks, the resilience to learn from failure, and the creative skills to shape the future.

Through our DT curriculum, we strive to empower pupils to become creative problem-solvers and innovative thinkers, capable of making positive contributions to society and their future.

Intent

Philosophical

Children will evaluate past and present design and technology to develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. At John Locke Academy, the children recognise the ongoing development of St Andrews Park and the different structures around them. We enable children to think critically about how technology has changed the cultural landscape of the world, the impact of this and the potential impact of further developments on the future.

Practical

Children will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They will learn how to cook as a crucial life skill that will help them to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in the future. Through hands-on, practical experiences we aim for children to leave Year 6 with knowledge and skills of DT which will inspire children to become inspirational in a range of careers, such as chefs, engineers, sculptures, carpenters, designers and architects.

Emotional

Children will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. They will understand that design and technology makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the local community and wider world. Children will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems considering their own and other’s needs, wants and values.

 Intellectual

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, children will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a repeated process of designing, making and improving, ensuring that they follow the principle of designing something, for somebody with a purpose

Sustainable

To foster a sense of responsibility and sustainability: we promote responsible use of resources and consideration of environmental impact in design and production processes, instilling in students a sense of social and environmental responsibility.
