Religious Education

Any problem can be solved between people if only they can trust each other.  Michael Morpurgo, War Horse

At John Locke Academy, as part of our core values, our intention is for all children to develop positive attitudes towards other cultures, building on those they are familiar with at home. Uxbridge is a diverse place in which to to live and  children will have multiple experiences with people from all walks of life whether they have a faith or not. The children at JLA are curious and sensitive and happy to talk about and celebrate their differences and similarities. Our RE curriculum is intended to help children understand each other  and therefore help our community to be peaceful and open minded.

RE prepares children for living in a multi-faith society, it offers opportunity for reflection, and it challenges pupils to consider, analyse and evaluate issues. The purpose of Religious Education is not attempt to alter a child's beliefs, reflecting the ethos of our school, but to broaden their understanding of how and why people live their lives in the way they do. In questioning and being curious, our intent is give children the values and skills they need to be empathetic and inclusive citizens.

We currently use Discovery RE as our main scheme of work and are working with the local Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) on developing our work further. Across the school each year group will focus on aspects of Christianity plus one further world religion (Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism). The planning is designed to draw out a respect for different religious beliefs while highlighting the things that people have in common. Our intention is that all children have a good understanding of different beliefs, non-beliefs and practices. We mark different festivals across the year from the various faiths represented in our school community and tap into our community's knowledge and expertise in ensuring that curriculum content is brought to life.
